God Didn't Write Women Into Scripture as Footnotes

There are stories in Scripture that we know well.

And then there are the stories we discover when we slow down.

Stories of women who prayed when circumstances seemed impossible. Women who stepped forward when others hesitated. Women who endured rejection, loss, danger, uncertainty, and sacrifice.

Their stories may appear in only a few chapters—or even a few verses.

But their place in God's story is anything but small.

They carried the thread.

🧵 The Tapestry We Cannot Always See

Imagine standing in front of a massive tapestry.

From the front, you see a beautiful design.

But imagine being behind it while it is being woven.

You would see loose threads.

Knots.

Colors that don't seem to belong together.

Threads that appear to go nowhere.

You might even wonder why the Weaver allowed certain threads to be there at all.

Our lives can feel like that.

We see one thread.

God sees the entire tapestry.

This is one of the truths at the heart of Scripture.

God's people don't always understand what He is doing while He is doing it.

But throughout Scripture, we see God faithfully weaving individual lives into His greater purposes.

And some of those threads were women whose stories changed everything.

🌿 Episode 1: Deborah — The Mother and the Judge

Our journey begins with Deborah.

Her story is found in Judges 4–5.

Israel was living under oppression. The nation had turned away from God, and for twenty years they suffered under the power of Jabin, king of Canaan, and his military commander, Sisera.

Then Scripture introduces us to a woman sitting beneath a palm tree.

Her name was Deborah.

She was a prophetess and a judge.

People came to her for judgment.

But Deborah's story teaches us something important:

God's calling often begins with faithfulness before anyone sees the significance of it.

She wasn't introduced standing on a battlefield.

She was serving God where He had already placed her.

Then came the call to rise.

⚔️ “Has Not the LORD... Commanded You?”

Deborah summoned Barak and delivered God's command.

The situation was frightening.

The enemy had military power.

Israel was outmatched.

But Deborah's confidence wasn't based on Israel's strength.

It was based on God's word.

“Has not the LORD, the God of Israel, commanded you?”

— Judges 4:6

That question reaches far beyond the battlefield.

It reaches us.

How often do we wait for perfect circumstances before obeying God?

How often do we want God to show us the entire path before we take the next step?

Deborah reminds us that obedience doesn't require seeing the entire tapestry.

It requires trusting the Weaver.

🧵 The Golden Thread

The victory that followed wasn't ultimately about Deborah becoming a hero.

It was about God being faithful.

That's an important distinction.

Biblical stories aren't primarily stories about extraordinary people.

They are stories about an extraordinary God working through ordinary people who are willing to trust Him.

Deborah's story points us toward a recurring biblical truth:

God can use the thread you think is too small.

Your prayer matters.

Your obedience matters.

Your faithfulness matters.

The assignment God has given you today matters—even if nobody else sees it.

You may not understand how your obedience fits into God's larger plan.

You don't have to.

The Weaver sees what you cannot.

✨ What Does Deborah's Story Have to Do With Jesus?

This is where Divine Tapestry goes deeper than simply telling stories about biblical women.

We aren't studying these women merely because they were courageous.

We're studying them because their stories exist within the larger story of God's redemption.

The Old Testament continually points forward.

God repeatedly delivers His people.

God repeatedly demonstrates His faithfulness.

God repeatedly works through unexpected people.

And eventually, the story reaches its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

The victories of the Old Testament were never the final victory.

The deliverances were never the final deliverance.

The thread was still being woven.

Until the story reached Calvary.

And the resurrection.

Maybe you're waiting.

Maybe you're rebuilding.

Maybe you're serving quietly.

Maybe you're praying for someone who hasn't changed.

Maybe you're walking through a season you don't understand.

Maybe you're wondering whether the small things you're doing for God actually matter.

Remember Deborah.

She was faithful before the battle.

She obeyed before she knew the outcome.

She trusted God before she saw the victory.

And when the victory came, she gave the glory to God.

You may not see the whole tapestry.

But that doesn't mean God has stopped weaving.

🙏 A Prayer for Your Thread

Father,

Thank You for reminding us through the story of Deborah that You see what we cannot see.

When our circumstances seem confusing, help us trust You.

When our assignment feels small, help us remain faithful.

When You call us to step forward, give us courage to obey.

And when we cannot understand how the pieces fit together, remind us that You are still the Weaver.

Take our lives, our prayers, our obedience, our waiting, and even our broken places—and weave them according to Your purposes.

Keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, the center of Your redemptive story.
